FletcherConsult completed a major project with the Battlefields Trust to develop the definitive battlefield resource for the UK in August 2004. The project was funded through English Heritage by The National Lottery.

There are many aspects to the study of the history of warfare, but it was in battle that armies and commanders found their ultimate challenge.

There are more than 500 historic battlefields and other fields of conflict in England, ranging in date from before the Roman Conquest (AD43) through to the skirmishes associated with the Jacobite risings of the 18th century. The Battlefields Trust is developing a UK Fields of Conflict database which provides a basic record of these sites. During the winter of 2004-5, in collaboration with Historic Scotland, this database was enchanced with over 350 sites in Scotland. A project is now underway, running from 2006-2008, in conjunction with Leeds University and English Heritage, to enhance the data on English battlefields. For more information follow the English Battlefields link on the left hand side of this page.

Detailed information on more than forty of the most important, well preserved and most accurately located of the English battles was added to the website in 2004-2005 with HLF funding. A selection of battlefields in Scotland are being added in 2005 as part of the project with Historic Scotland.

The Battlefield Trust say:
The information provided here helps you to explore our battlefields through books, maps and original documents or on the ground. From the earliest of our accurately located battlefields, at Maldon (Essex, 991), right through to Sedgemoor (Somerset, 1685), which was the last battle to be fought on English soil, there is a wealth of information to be found in these pages.

Discover when and where armies challenged invading forces, as at Hastings (Sussex, 1066) or Flodden (Northumberland, 1513), as well as the many times when our countrymen fought one another in various bloody civil wars. At battlefields like Bosworth (Leicestershire, 1485) and Naseby (Northamptonshire, 1645) you can see where some of the most famous, or infamous, characters in our history, like Oliver Cromwell or Richard III played for the highest stakes.

There are hundreds of battlefields and other fields of conflict scattered across the UK. While many of these are marked on our national maps, we selected 48 sites in England as Featured Battlefields, for which detailed information is provided here. They include all 43 Registered Battlefields and a handful of other nationally important sites which are candidates for inclusion on the Register. The Resource Centre exploits some of the unique opportunities offered by the internet to provide a wide range of new material on these battlefields which the Trust hopes will prove of value to a wide range of users.

For the featured sites there are resources ranging from transcripts of contemporary accounts through to modern analysis of the battles and suggestions on further reading. You will also find battlefield trails with accompanying maps to assist you in visiting the battlefields themselves, so that you too can experience the feel of the place and make up you own mind as to exactly where and how the events unfolded. Armed with this information, put yourself in the place of a commander or a common soldier on that fateful day when great armies clashed to decide the future course of our history.
